Canon’s smallest EOS Cinema camera.

The C70 changes the rules for Canon’s cinematic camera form factor; giving filmmakers more creative space to work in and bringing cinematic video to a DSLR like ecosystem. All the flexibility of a small form factor with a high end professional back bone.

So what is the Canon C70?

It is the first EOS Cinema camera that is compatible with any RF lens from the Canon EOS R lineup. The camera features Canon’s 4K Super 35mm DGO (Dual Gain Output) sensor. with 4K 120P Slow Motion, High Dynamic Range, and Dual Pixel CMOS AF.

The camera finds a new place in Canons Cinema line up below the C200 and C300 MkIII, though in my eyes the only lesser aspects of the C70 maybe it’s weight, size, and price. The C70 shares most of the features with its bigger brother, the C300 mkiii; while requiring less than half as much money to be called the owner.

Built-in ND Filters

The C70 features ND filters of 2 / 4 / 6 / 8 / 10 Stops built into the body. This giving the filmmaker the flexibility to have more control over the shutter angle while not compromising from desired exposure.

Dual Gain Output

16 Stops of dynamic range is achieved through the DGO sensor producing images optimised for high dynamic range by creating two images; one prioritises saturation in the highlight areas and the other prioritises lower noise in the low light areas.

Professional standard audio

The C70 gives the filmmaker comprehension audio capture control with 2 mini XLR 3-pin connectors, audio monitoring, built-in stereo microphones, and substantial audio gain control. All this makes the small form factor that much more impressive.

EF feels right at home

Canon also announced an EF to RF adapter to use the broad range of Canon EF lenses on the EOS C70. The adaptor also has a x0.71 boost to maintain the full frame angle of view of your EF lenses.

More possibilities

The C70’s form factor and weight allow it to be used on accessories and mounts that would usually exclude EOS Cinema from its use. This allows filmmakers to maintain the cinema look and feel across all shots.

We are looking forward to see what impact this camera will have on the market.
